We Are What We Repeatedly Do!

Most knowledgable basketball fans would agree, John Wooden of UCLA is the greatest college coach ever (Coach K of Duke certainly concurs). He was a stickler for mastering details: ”We are what we repeatedly do.” He studied Aristotle: “Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

His players practiced their basketball skills. And, they practiced disciplines which develop character:

  Be on time.
  Tell the truth.
  Take responsibility.
  Help your teammates.

Reading about Coach Wooden makes me look at what I repeatedly do in business and in life. At my choices, my habits, but more, he makes me think about who I am and who I want to be; makes me think whether my behavior is consistent with what it should be for my “excellent.”

What do you “repeatedly do?” Whom do you aspire to be? What is your “excellent?” As Coach Wooden reminds us: “We are what we repeatedly do.”
